Firefighters from the Dix Hills Fire Department out on the east end helped save a woman from a raging house fire in Jamesport on Saturday afternoon, September 9, 2017 at about 2:45 p.m. Dix Hills FD Captain Scott DiPino and Firefighters Mike Gatto and Matt Mattone were touring the North Fork with other firefighters and stopped for lunch at

Jason’s Vineyard, when they spotted smoke and heard a woman screaming. The firefighters ran over to the rear of the nearby burning house, grabbed a woman from inside and walked her outside away from the fire. The woman was trying to rescue her pets and suffered smoke inhalation. The three firefighters along with Dix Hills firefighters David Baack and Justin Schweidel, assisted Jamesport firefighters stretching hose lines up to the house as the fire trucks arrived on the scene. The Jamesport Fire Department was assisted in battling the blaze by the Mattituck and Cutchogue fire departments, while a crew from Riverhead provided standby coverage. The woman rescued and a Mattituck firefighter who suffered minor injuries were taken to an area hospital.
