Nicholas Ciappetta Appointed as New Huntington Town Attorney
The Huntington Town Board, at its January 3, 2018 organizational meeting, appointed South Huntington School Board president Nicholas Ciappetta as the next Town Attorney.
In a resolution sponsored by Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci, the Town Board unanimously selected Mr. Ciappetta, who has served for the past 13 years in the New York City Corporation Counsel’s office, the city’s equivalent of the Town Attorney. As part of the Corporation Counsel’s office, Mr. Ciappetta handled a number of notable cases, represented dozens of City administrative agencies in state and federal courts and supervised a team of junior attorneys as well as cases filed in federal court in both the Eastern and Southern Districts.
Mr. Ciappetta is a graduate of Walt Whitman High School, in the same class as Supervisor Lupinacci. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College and a law degree from Hofstra University, where he served as a staff member and editor on the law review. He was first elected to the South Huntington School Board in 2004. He served as its vice president from 2012 to last June, when he was elected president.
“Nick is an accomplished municipal attorney with experience as a school board member in budgeting and labor issues,” Supervisor Lupinacci said. “He is well prepared to lead the Town’s legal department and ensure that our residents get top-notch legal representation in government matters.”
Mr. Ciappetta is expected to begin serving as Town attorney on February 14, 2018.
In a related action, the Board appointed retired Court of Claims Judge Daniel Martin as Deputy Town Attorney. Judge Martin, who had served as an acting State Supreme Court justice, is a former assistant district attorney and Huntington Town councilman. He is also expected to begin serving February 14, 2018.
In other action, the Town Board:
— set the schedule of Town Board meetings for the year, increasing the frequency from once a month to two (with the exception of July and August), with 10 of the 22 meetings scheduled for the evening.
— extended until April 15, 2018 the deadline for acting on the application of Kids Plus for a rezoning that would allow construction of a congregate care facility on Cuba Hill Road in Greenlawn.
— requested that the New York State Comptroller conduct an audit of the Town to determine if the Town is operating economically and efficiently. The resolution notes that the audit would allow the new administration to have a comprehensive analysis of all fiscal records and procedures.
