Michael Larson was appointed as the principal of Commack Middle School at a special Board of Education meeting on August 16, 2018.  Mr. Larson, who was one of the Assistant Principals at Commack High School, will be joining the administrative team at the Middle School immediately, to fill the vacancy left by former principal, Anthony Davidson.

A graduate of Plymouth State University with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Social Science Education and a Master of Education in Special Education, Mr. Larson also received his School Building Leader and School District Leader certification from Stony Brook University, with an overall GPA of 4.0. He began his career in Commack in 2007, teaching history, economics, and government classes. Mr. Larson worked closely with our students as a class advisor, a student council advisor, and with the Boys Scholar Athlete Leadership Club. His work with the staff included leading groups focused on redesigning the learning environment to support multimodality-learning experiences for our students. He served as the Coordinator of Student Affairs and Attendance during the 2015-16 school year.

Dr. Donald James, Superintendent of Commack Schools, stated, “We know that Michael’s sensitivity to students, their developmental abilities, and his capacity to work alongside staff members will support student success. His innate ability to work with staff on the implementation of building-wide programs through cooperation and participation is what we found in Mr. Larson. We anticipate a very smooth transition as well as an amazing new school year under Mr. Larson’s leadership.”

Michael lives in Stony Brook with his wife and two young children, a four-year-old son and an 18 month-old daughter.  “I cherish spending time with my family,” he said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join an exceptional group of educators, staff members, administrators, and parents as we collectively focus on the social, emotional, and educational needs of our students.  I look forward to embracing new learnings and maintaining the program of academic excellence that has been established at the Commack Middle School.”
