Huntington Resident Appointed Assistant Principal at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech
Madelaine Hackett is a proven leader and a true innovator in the field of education. She brings a diverse background of teaching and administrative experience to her role as Assistant Principal of In-District Programs at Barry Tech. She is already enthusiastically applying her vast knowledge to improve the educational experience for in-district programs as well as programs at Barry Tech and at BOCES Twilight sites.
“We’re working to strengthen our programs to be as effective as possible,” Ms. Hackett said. “I believe the programs through Barry Tech are a game-changer for students. There is an opportunity, through the In-District programs, for students to have a unique experience right in their own home districts”
Ms. Hackett began her career as an artist working in a therapeutic program to teach students with ADHD how to use art to help focus themselves. Following this, she spent three years as lead instructor at an art school before joining the NYC Teaching Fellows as an English as a Second Language Teacher and earning the position of English Department Chairperson in the New York City school system.
In the interest of broadening her horizons as an educator, Ms. Hackett left New York to pursue a position as school development coach for New Tech Network, where she led professional development and curriculum development for teachers and school leaders at locations throughout the United States. From there, she moved to become a founding member of the Urban Assembly Maker Academy in Manhattan, an innovative new public high school, where she became assistant principal.
“All schools set out to educate students, but only the best schools seek to improve the learning of all stakeholders,” Ms. Hackett said when asked what drew her to Barry Tech. “That includes not only the students, but teachers, administrators and the larger community. Barry Tech’s small class sizes really give students a huge advantage,” she added. “I wanted to be working somewhere that I would be making a difference and this is definitely the place.”
Ms. Hackett is certified as both a district and school building leader, and has served as both a presenter and panelist at numerous educational conferences across the country. She holds master’s degrees from both Canisius College and Long Island University, and a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, where she graduated cum laude.
