The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to reports of a Confined Space Rescue on Friday morning, October 19, 2018, at 10:15 a.m. at a home on Woodfern Court. First arriving units found a man trapped just below his waist in the mud, six feet below the ground in a trench. Technical Rescue Teams were requested from the Huntington Manor and East Farmingdale fire departments, as well as the Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Unit. About 50 emergency responders from all departments worked together nearly 2-1/2 hours to safely remove the worker using specialized rescue equipment. The 22-year-old man was conscious and alert and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip by Dix Hills FD Rescue Squad ambulance. Suffolk County Fire Rescue Coordinators were on the scene providing assistance. The Melville Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided standby coverage during the incident.
