Melville Fire Department Battles Condo Fire at The Coves

The Melville Fire Department responded to a fire at The Coves at Melville, a senior condo complex on Morley Circle, Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at 10:54 am. The fire was reported as smoke in a second floor unit. Upon arrival, firefighters located an active fire in the ground floor unit below. About 40 firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze which was contained to a rear bedroom, with smoke damage throughout the unit. Melville FD was on the scene with three engines, ladder truck, two ambulances and Fire Police, under the direction of Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt. Mutual aid assistance at the scene was provided by the Huntington Manor, East Farmingdale and Plainview fire departments. Standby crews from the Dix Hills and Farmingdale fire departments handled an ambulance call and a commercial automatic alarm during the incident. There were no injuries reported, but unfortunately a cat died in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal.
