Centerport Fire Department Contains House Fire
The Centerport Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire on McKinley Terrace, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:28 pm. Firefighters located the fire in the basement that extended up through the walls into the first and second floors. Crews aggressively attacked the blaze which was contained to the basement and two rooms on the upper floors. The house was elevated about 50 feet above the street, and presented a challenge for firefighters in stretching three hose lines and equipment up a long staircase. Centerport FD was on the scene with three engines, a ladder truck, heavy rescue truck, two ambulances and fire police. Units were under the command of Chief Rich Miltner and Assistant Chiefs Andy Heglund, Kyle McLaughlin, and Deputy Chief Dr. Jack Geffken. The Halesite, Greenlawn and East Northport FD’s assisted at the scene, with the Huntington and Northport FD’s providing standby coverage. Sixty firefighters had the fire under control within 40 minutes, and there were no injuries. One Centerport firefighter partially fell through the second floor, but was able to remove himself uninjured. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal. Suffolk Fire-Rescue Coordinators were also on the scene assisting.
