Suffolk County today announced a number of upcoming Citizen Preparedness Training Classes for County residents throughout August and September, 2019. The NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program, established in 2014under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, provides residents with the tools and resources necessary to prepare for any type of disaster, to respond accordingly and to recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions.
September is National Preparedness month, and is designed to encourage residents to be prepared for disasters or emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities.
“Long Island has seen first-hand the devastating effects a natural disaster can have,” said County Executive Bellone. “We don’t want our residents to get caught unprepared, that is why, in conjunction with the Governor, we are hosting Citizen Preparedness Training Classes across the County to give our communities the tools and knowledge they need should a crisis strike.”
New York State Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Patrick A. Murphy said, “From natural disasters to terrorism, New York has one of the most diverse threat landscapes in the nation, which makes it critical we ensure citizens are prepared to face anything thrown their way. Thankfully, the state’s Citizen’s Preparedness Corps. offers New Yorkers a one stop-shop opportunity to receive the resources and information necessary for keeping their families safe, no matter the emergency. During this year’s National Preparedness Month, I encourage everyone to evaluate and strengthen their own individual preparedness by signing up for a class and joining the more than 300,000 New Yorkers who have taken this training.”
The first class, which will be held in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, Senator Monica Martinez, and Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, takes place Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 5:30 PM at the South Country Library, located at 22 Station Road in Bellport.
The second class, which will be held in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, Senator Jim Gaughran and Assemblyman Steve Stern, takes place on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 6:00 PM, at the Huntington Assembly of God located at 1700 New York Avenue in Huntington Station. Both classes will be held in Spanish.

More than 300,000 New Yorkers have been trained through this program. During each class, New Yorkers are taught an all-hazards approach to preparedness, giving them skills that can be utilized in any life-threatening situation, as opposed to developing individualized plans for each type of disaster or emergency.
The training course will provide an introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies. Each family that attends will receive one Emergency Preparedness kit.
All those interested in participating must register in advance. To register, and for additional information, visitwww.prepare.ny.gov.
