Freshmen entering Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in September will be offered a helping hand throughout the school year as part of the district’s Freshmen Buddies Program.

Incoming freshmen will be paired up with select upperclassmen, who will serve as mentors and help guide the new students through the upcoming school year.

As part of a one-day training event on Aug. 21, 2019, the seniors learned valuable leadership and active listening skills. They will serve as positive role models for the incoming freshmen, according to School Counselor Christiana Dobra.

In addition, the upper classmen were fortunate enough to work with Diane Urso, the Long Island regional coordinator for the New York State Mentoring Program. Through several engaging activities, she advised the students on the importance of building positive bonds, developing self-esteem and making positive life choices.
