Suffolk County Police Unveil Unimog Vehicle, Dedicate To Fallen Marine Corporal Christopher Scherer
Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Stuart Cameron joined family and friends of fallen United States Marine Corp Combat Engineer Corporal Christopher Scherer during the unveiling and dedication of a newly detailed Unimog vehicle in Scherer’s honor on September 7, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the East Northport Fire Department Headquarters
The department received the vehicle, a multi-purpose all-wheel drive truck, through the military surplus equipment program and it will be used by the department and The County Rescue Task Force to move materials as needed and during events.
In a continuing effort to honor fallen service members, the department is dedicating this vehicle to Marine Corporal Scherer, who was killed by an enemy sniper while conducting combat operations in Taqaddum, Iraq on July 21, 2007. Scherer grew up in East Northport was 21 years old when he was killed. The department previously dedicated military surplus vehicles, a Humvee in honor of Lt. Michael J. Murphy, who was killed in action on June 28, 2005, and an emergency rescue vehicle to Air National Guard Master Sgt. Christopher Raguso, who was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq on March 15, 2018.
Peter Sclafani of Star Energy Transportation donated his time to detail the vehicle.
