Quick action by the Centerport Fire Department saved a Centerport home after a bedroom fire broke out Sunday night, October 6, 2019 at about 9pm on Van Buren Street. First arriving firefighter Lieut. Nick Feeley, an ex-chief of the department, entered the home and closed the door to the bedroom to prevent the fire from spreading. He used a fire extinguisher to hold back the flames until the arrival of Engine 2-6-2, whose crew stretched a hoseline into the house and knocked down the blaze. Three engines, a ladder truck, heavy rescue, ambulance and paramedic unit were dispatched and under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Kyle McLaughlin. The Halesite, Greenlawn and Northport FD’s assisted at the scene, with the East Northport FD provided standby coverage. Fifty firefighters were on the scene and the fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, containing the fire to the one bedroom. Chief McLaughlin credited the firefighters that made a really quick stop on the fire. “There was great teamwork and thanks to our neighboring departments for their assistance,” said Chief McLaughlin. The Huntington Town Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police Arson Squad are investigating the cause of the fire. Suffolk Fire-Rescue Coordinators were also on the scene assisting. There were no injuries reported.
