Orson Welles: Genius of Stage and Screen

With Film Historian and Lecturer Max Alvarez

Max Alvarez explores Welles’ stellar radio, theatrical and motion picture work: CBS Radio star at age 20, Macbeth staging at age 21, legendary War of the Worlds radio broadcast at age 23, and Citizen Kane director for RKO Radio Pictures at age 25. An actor extraordinaire, visionary stage and screen director, Welles remains one of the most maligned yet most admired filmmakers in history. Much has been made of Welles’ Hollywood “downfall,” but too little has been said of his undervalued and often extraordinary cinematic achievements as an industry outcast and independent filmmaker. Alvarez focuses on Welles’ genius and his complex film creations, from the mutilated masterpiece The Magnificent Ambersons to such artistic European triumphs as The Trial.
