SCPD Announces Operational Changes Due To COVID-19 Outbreak

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Suffolk County Police Department is enacting operational changes in an effort to limit person-to-person contact.

Any resident who is feeling ill is requested to not respond to a precinct or police headquarter and instead call 911 and disclose all health concerns and symptoms to enable officers to prepare and protect themselves and the community.

Precincts will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week but the department is encouraging people to not visit precincts unless critically necessary. Fingerprinting services will not be available.

There will be limited public access to the lobby at Suffolk County Police Headquarters, located at 30 Yaphank Ave. in Yaphank, until further notice.

Police reports can be filed multiple ways. Select incidents can be reported online at www.suffolkpd.org or via phone at 631-852-COPS.

Reports of crimes that can be filed online or via phone, in both English and Spanish, include harassing communications, lost property, criminal mischief, non-criminal property damage, minor motor vehicle crashes, identity theft and some larcenies.

If a report cannot be filled online or by telephone, an officer will be dispatched to your location. Keep in mind the following changes while awaiting the arrival of the assigned officers:

  • The department is experiencing high call volume and expects the need for our services to increase as the situation evolves. You may experience longer than normal wait times.
  • Officers have been directed to wear personal protective equipment—goggles, masks, gloves and protective gowns— in certain circumstances and to avoid entering buildings unless absolutely necessary. As such, you may be asked to meet the officer outside your home or business to report an incident.

Reports and records, including incident reports, motor vehicle accident reports and background checks, can be requested online at www.suffolkpd.org. Motor vehicle accident reports may also be obtained at www.buycrash.com (additional fees apply on this website). If you do not have access to a computer, you may call 631-852-6015 and your request will be taken by a staff member and records will be furnished via U.S. mail along with a bill for any applicable fees.  Reports/records CANNOT be obtained at precincts or other police facilities.

The Alarm Management Program will be closed until further notice. The present status of your alarm will remain the same. Extensions will be provided if your bill is due during this time.

The Pistol License Section will be open for purchase orders only. Pistol license applications can be obtained online at www.suffolkpd.org. Applications can be submitted online or via U.S. mail. For any licensing inquiries, contact Pistol License at 631-852-6575.
