The Commack Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to a head-on collision Saturday night on Jericho Turnpike near Valmont Avenue at around 7:15 p.m. The crash involved a car and a sports utility vehicle with one victim trapped in the car. Commack volunteer firefighters used the heavy rescue “jaws of life” tools to pry open the doors, remove the roof and displace the dashboard in order to free the patient. One patient from each vehicle suffered injuries and were transported to Southside Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital. About 30 firefighters and EMS personnel were on the scene with two engines, a heavy rescue truck and two ambulances under the command of Commack Fire Chief Andy Babajko and Commack Ambulance Assistant Chief Bob Cavalieri.
