Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two fishermen who became caught in a current in the Long Island Sound in Fort Salonga, New York, this afternoon September 21, 2017.
Carlos Jeronimo and Wilfredo Belc were fishing off of a jetty at Crab Meadow Beach in the Long Island Sound, when they went into the water and became caught in an outgoing tidal current that pulled them away from shore. A witness called 911 at 2:35 p.m. and Marine Bureau Officers Keith Walters and Cory Kim, aboard Marine Bravo, responded and rescued the two men who were approximately 300 yards from shore.
Marine Bureau was assisted by Second Precinct Police Officer Michael Caponi, Officer Daniel Denig, Officer Richard Murphy, Officer Joseph Reilly, Officer Paul Weibke and Northport Police Department Officers, Officer Stephen Kerekes (first on scene), Officer Gregory Cerar, Sgt. Jon-Todd Herfurth, Lt. Michael Cook who helped guide the Marine Bureau officers to the victims.
Jeronimo, 26, and Belc, 27, both of Jamaica, Queens, were transported by Northport Fire Department to Huntington Hospital.
