On February 17, 2018, the Commack Fire Department remembered one of their own, Police Officer Charles Oddo who was killed in the line of duty 22 years ago while assigned to NYPD Highway 2.Firefighters led by Third Assistant Chief John Barry and an NYPD Color Guard gathered at the Charles A. Oddo Verleye Park, a precious place to remember and pray for the soul of departed Commack FD member and NYPD Highway Patrolman Charles Oddo, who gave his life in the line of duty. Officer Oddo’s parents also attended the ceremony. Charles Oddo was a guardian and protector from his earliest years. He transitioned from watching over his younger sister in this very park, to protecting the people of Commack. He continued to follow that calling, to the NYPD's elite Highway Patrol Unit. Officer Oddo was killed in the in the line of duty when he was struck by a drunk driver while directing traffic away from a disabled motorist.
