 Roosevelt, Pulitzer, and Hearst: Press Rivals & Presidential Enemies

During Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency, rival newspaper publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst not only invented mass media and the concept of muckraking, but enabled the press to attack the president. In the process, they became Roosevelt’s mortal enemies. At the close of his presidency in 1908, Roosevelt orchestrated a federal libel case against Pulitzer’s New York World, telling an associate he hoped to jail the famed publisher; we can only imagine what Roosevelt would have “tweeted.” TR’s war with the press of his day is unlike anything that came before or after his presidency (President Donald Trump’s “fake news,” and “enemies of the people,” notwithstanding.)

In this introduction to the Jewish Holidays, we will explore the history and meaning of the holidays and learn how and why we celebrate them.  This class is geared toward those who are new (or “newish”) to Judaism, either through personal journey or marriage.

2,000 Years of Italian Jewish History

With Professor and Author Stanislao Pugliese

There have been Jewish communities on the Italian peninsula for over two millennia and a Jewish presence in Rome before Christianity. A professor of modern European history, Stanislao Pugliese offers a discussion on ancient, medieval and modern Italian Jewish history and culture including literature, theology, musical composition, politics, and the fluid position of Jews in Italian society.  There will be a special emphasis on the modern period since the unification of 1861, as well as a focus on the rise of fascism and the anti-fascist response.   Professor Pugliese will also discuss the Shoah in Italy, with on epilogue on post-World War II life.

Columbo: Just One More Thing An Evening of Mystery

With Professional Producer, Writer and Director Sal St. George

During this presentation, you will become Lt. Columbo. You will view clips from one of Columbo’s most complex cases, “Murder Under Glass” with guest star Louis Jordan. You will possess the very same clues as Columbo. Can you solve the mystery?

Peter Falk created an indelible impression on the TV viewing public with his masterful interpretation of Lt. Columbo. We will examine the origins of the beloved detective, discover who originated the character, and learn about the writing team that created the disheveled detective.
