An exciting celebration of Donovan, the legendary folk troubadour who transformed the music landscape with a series of enigmatic and wondrous pop masterpieces, screens in the Rock Legends Live monthly series hosted by music archivist Bill Shelley.

The incomparable Scottish singer Donovan began his career as a folksinger with such hits as “Catch the Wind” and “Colours” that grabbed the British and American music scenes. He was first seen as a Dylan imitator but quickly proved to have his own sound, influencing many performers, including The Beatles. His songs have lasted through the decades and earned him induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

This program will show performances from TV shows, promotional clips, and live concerts from his early career. You will hear folk songs such as “Catch the Wind,” “Colours,” “You’re Gonna Need Somebody When I’m Gone,” and the more political folk genre of “Universal Soldier.” Also included are songs influenced by Donovan’s practice of Transcendental Meditation, such as “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” “Season of the Witch,” and “Atlantis.” These songs show a blend of pop, folk, jazz, reggae, and Eastern music; to label them a particular style would be to understate their complexity. This evening of musical compilation will be a treat and a musical time travel that should not be missed!
