Many of the East Coast’s top cross country teams gathered this past weekend for the Manhattan College Invitational, held in Van Cortlandt Park. In the 2.5-mile premier varsity event, Walt Whitman’s Boys Cross Country team took first place, in a race that featured over 32 teams from across the country. Whitman’s big win has earned then a bump up in the state standings, and they are currently ranked #4. “This was our first team in over 30 years to win this particular race,” said Coach Rob Conroy. “But it’s all just on paper right now. This was a big win for the team, but we will need to concentrate on winning our individual meets and the Suffolk County Championship. That’s our focus right now.”
Whitman’s runners and their respective times are as follows: Zach Cammer, 13:12.4; Michael Damato, 13:14.0; Patrick Cummings, 13:14.4; James Vallar, 13:42.0; Chris Laucella, 13:51.3; Brian Windisch, 14:00.3; and John Aiken, 14:23.3.
