Huntington Youth Writes, in partnership with the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau Project EXCEL, has kicked off its 13 annual writing contest for students in grades four through twelve who attend school and/or reside in the Town of Huntington. Since it began in 1999, over 11,000 entries have been received in this highly successful program.
More than $2,000 is available in cash prizes, and the winners will have their work published collectively by the Town. The writing categories are poetry, short fiction, and essays, with cash prizes for first, second, third, and honorable mention winners in each category in grades four and five, six through eight, and nine through twelve.
You can pick up entry forms at the Huntington Youth Bureau, Room 200, Village Green Center, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington, (phone # 631-271-5499). Forms will also be available at schools, libraries, and other sites in the Town of Huntington. Deadline for submissions is Friday, February 17, 2012 at 5pm, with an awards ceremony and publishing party to take place May 3, 2012, preceded by a writing workshop for the contest winners.
