The Nathan Hale VFW Post 1469 was proud to honor Middle School Student Olivia Cook (daughter of Councilman Eugene Cook) with a local “Patriot’s Pen” award that included a $250 scholarship, and High School Student Nicole Katz with a local “Voice of Democracy” $500 scholarship. Each student was honored for her essay on patriotism. Also honored was Coordinator for the Veteran’s Advisory Board
of the Town of Huntington, Carol Rocco, who was honored for her longtime support of veterans in the Town of Huntington.
The theme of the Patriot’s Pen contest was “Are You Proud of Your Country?” For the Voice of Democracy it was “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?” The winner of that honor, Nicole Katz, has already gone on to win the contest at the Suffolk County Council Level.
The Voice of Democracy program (VOD) was founded in 1947 to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. Each year, more than 51,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000- $16,000 and the first-place winner from each (State) VFW Department wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
The Patriot’s Pen youth essay-writing contest reviews roughly 112,000 essays from students in grades 6-8. The annual theme is chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Students may win one of several savings bonds totaling $1.2 million, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the National first place winner.
