  1. I think the town board was let off the hook here, but I understand not wanting to make more of an issue of a done-deal, point made.

However, I must say that it’s kind of hard to make the phone call to town council about subjects you have no knowledge of or meetings you don’t know are occurring! The town should be the ones letting ANY school district know ahead of time about developments that will affect their schools whether it is financially or by increased student populations.

We know that, as with the Hotel Huntington, the IDA deal was done before any public hearings. Mr. Cuthbertson’s pal who worked so hard to get him re-elected is now the head of the IDA and they’ve had a connection in Babylon for awhile now – so I would guess it was rather disingenuous of him to say that the town board has no “say” in the taxing authority of the IDA – he had influence. The HUFSD school board and administration had no way to win that fight or even get a compromise out of it. And now our taxpayers will pay for it.

Yes, other districts have had issues with the town developing properties causing a loss of revenue for them due to abatements. However, the fact remains that District 3 has gotten the brunt of the raw deals when it comes to added student enrollments. Senior housing and Canon buildings do not bring children to a district with their added costs to a school for programs and staffing. Numerous new apartment projects within the village, large housing developments such as Avalon and Highridge, the upcoming Columbia Terrace and soon to be approved apartments over retail stores on NY Ave in the Station DO add children to only District 3’s schools, no one else.

It would behoove the Town Board to recognize that Huntington Schools have made more than their fair share of sacrifice. In the future, a simple phone call from Town Hall to come over and talk is all they are asking for.
