WHAT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH?
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: What is involved in being a BLOCK CAPTAIN?
1) Visit all of your neighbors within 1 or 2 blocks from your home. Tell them what the Neighborhood Watch is, invite them to participate, and exchange contact information with them.
2) Create an email group, text group, and/or telephone chain of your participating neighbors so you can update them on important information immediately.
3) Call Officer Angela Ferrara at the SCPD 2nd Precinct to set up a date and time for your neighborhood’s first meeting, featuring a Block Assessment and Neighborhood Watch training provided by 2nd Precinct COPE Officers. During the Block Assessment, the COPE Officers will evaluate your street and home exteriors and provide suggestions and advice on improvements to keep your homes and neighborhood safer. Examples: Trim the bushes in front of the window, park your car in a certain place, submit a request to update the street light bulbs.
4) Inform your neighbors of the meeting date, time and location.
5) If an incident occurs in or near your neighborhood, the Block Captain will be notified so you can share that information with the neighbors through the email, text or telephone group.
6) Distribute provided newsletters, brochures or flyers to your neighbors regarding the Neighborhood Watch.
7) Work with your neighbors to plan meetings to stay in touch with each other, discuss your neighborhood’s safety needs and concerns and continue training.
8) Plan fun events with your neighbors such as holiday parties, picnics, and block parties.
