Cold Spring Harbor Library to Host Lecture on Heritage Gardening

Filed under: Around Town,Cold Spring Harbor |

Ken Greene, founder of the Hudson Valley Seed Library, will discuss New York’s gardening heritage on Monday, January 5, at 10:00 am at the Cold Spring Harbor Library & Environmental Center. Co-sponsored by the Three Harbors Garden Club, this program is free and open to the general public. Advance registration is recommended.

If every seed is a story, then every garden is a work of art bringing seed stories to life. This talk and slide presentation showcases New York’s gardening heritage through elegant, humorous, and telling images from the Hudson Valley Seed Library’s collection of vintage seed catalogs, seed packs, and ephemera from 1850s-1960s. Moving from history into the present, attendees will see some of the contemporary art commissioned by the Seed Library, and photos of the Seed Library farm. The lecture will also include information about easy, beautiful, and tasty heirloom varieties for gardeners to grow at home.

Ken Greene is founder of the Hudson Valley Seed Library, a project he germinated in a small town library that has now blossomed into a company and farm devoted to producing seed for home gardeners and farmers, fostering a regional seed-saving community, and celebrating seeds through art. Greene is on the board of directors for the Organic Seed Alliance and has given presentations for many organizations such as the Northeast Organic Farming Association, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Culinary Institute of America, Seed Savers Exchange, and National Heirloom Expo.

The Hudson Valley Seed Library’s traveling exhibit, the Art of the Heirloom, will be on display at the Cold Spring Harbor Library from January 5 through January 28. The collection includes garden-themed contemporary art, seed packet art prints, and Lilliputian landscape prints.

The mission of the Cold Spring Harbor Library & Environmental Center is to serve and promote the informational, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of our residents. Additionally, we offer many exciting programs that are open to all.
