A Statement from Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci

“I look forward to working with the governor and our legislative leadership this year to tackle the many issues presented by Gov. Cuomo in his State of the State and Executive Budget Address. As this is day one of budget negotiations, we need to take advantage of this bipartisan opportunity to support our fellow New Yorkers throughout the state.

“It is no secret that long-time residents are leaving the state in record numbers. Long Islanders are in need of a state that is affordable and a desirable place to live, work and raise a family. Unless we provide this, residents will continue to leave in troves.

“I agree with the governor in that we need to provide tax relief to homeowners and businesses. To truly provide tax relief, however, we need a comprehensive plan to tackle the main cost drivers of local property tax bills: unfunded mandates. Every hardworking Long Islander should have an opportunity to own a home and raise a family affordably.

“I also look forward to learning more details of the proposed small-business tax cuts. Small businesses are the number one employer in the nation and a key component to our local economies and way of life. We should take advantage of any opportunity that we can support local businesses and bring communities together to create jobs.

“And finally, as an educator and as the Ranking Member on the Assembly Higher Education Committee, I care deeply about the education of our young people. With that, I was interested to see the governor propose a student loan forgiveness plan, and I am eager to learn about it in greater detail. Encouraging graduates to continue to live in New York and bring their ambition and knowledge back to their local communities is paramount, especially as we experience a ‘brain drain’ of sorts in this state.

“I would like to share the governor’s confidence that 2015 should be a year of improvement and reform for the great state of New York, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that is the case.”
