A Ford Focus driven by a young man in his early 20’s pulled into a spot in front of the TD Bank at 1040 East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station. As he approached the parking space he hit the gas instead of the brake, jumped the curb and hit a customer who was just about to enter the bank. The car hit the woman and was knocked down by the impact. The vehicle came to a stop because the glass doors of the bank got jammed up against the ceiling, stopping the white 4 door Ford Focus. The young driver immediately put the car in reverse and backed up to a normal parking position.
People in the bank and in cars from the parking lot came running to aid the woman who appeared to be in her 50’s. The bank manager with the help of a customer who was a PA (Physicians Assistant) assisted the woman. They stabilized her head and one of the customers retrieved a blanket from a car to keep her warm until the First Aid Squad arrived. The young man who caused the accident was visibly shaken and was deeply concerned about the women’s condition.
One witness commented “thank god the doors stopped the car from completely going into the bank and running over the woman”. Plus he also noted that she was lucky the glass doors did not shatter. Huntington First Aid squad arrived and transported her to Huntington Hospital for further evaluation.
