West Hollow Middle School Takes Top Honors in Math Olympiads

On March 12th at the Brookhaven National Lab, the West Hollow Middle School Math Olympiads A and B Teams placed 1st and 4^th, respectively, in the Suffolk County Math Tournament. More than 25 school teams compete for these honors.  The A team members are Rinni Bhansali, Kavya Rao, Jared Bank, Jiachen Lee and Kyle Kampta.  The B team members are Anish Pisipati, Jade Long, Melissa Chen, Cassandra Ye and Kaitlyn Hoxha.

Both the A and B teams were awarded trophies.  The members of the A team were awarded individual first place medals for placing in the top position.

In the Individual Competition, Rinni Bhansali placed 1st and Jared Banks placed 4th out of the 125 students competing in Suffolk County.

The event is extremely exciting!   Both the team and the individual contests offer a great opportunity for students to solve problems and experience the different methods other students used to solve the same problems.  There is even a Mix-It-Up round where the students work with students from other Suffolk County Schools on contest questions.  During the Tie-Breaker round, the students who have tied previously are called up to work at a table in front of the all of the school teams as the students in the audience try to solve the problem as it is projected on the wall for all to see.
