The Melville Fire Department was dispatched to a crash on the Northern State Parkway where a car ran off the road and slammed into a tree, shearing it off. The accident occurred in the parkway’s westbound lanes, west of Route 110 on Thursday, April 2, at around 10:50 a.m.
Firefighters used chainsaws to cut trees in order to gain access to the car where the driver was trapped in the wreckage. The heavy rescue “Jaws of Life” tools were put to work as firefighters removed both driver’s side doors and the B-post to extricate the driver.
Under the command of Second Assistant Chief Paul Mahler, about 15 firefighters and rescue personnel were on the scene with an ambulance, two heavy rescue trucks, and a paramedic responder unit. The male patient suffered traumatic injuries and was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center by the Melville FD Rescue Squad.
