Lupinacci Seeks More Reasonable Approach for Traffic Light Cameras

LupinacciAssemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently commented on the growing opposition to the red light cameras in Suffolk County and other parts of Long Island. Motorists have been voicing their disapproval of this form of traffic enforcement, which capture images of vehicles illegally passing through intersections, because of the large fines from violations.

“I’ve had several discussions with frustrated motorists about these red light cameras, and I believe this issue needs to be addressed,” said Lupinacci. “Although public safety is a top priority of mine, and I am a strong advocate for safer roadways, I’d like to factor in other technologies like yellow light countdown clocks to go along with the cameras.”

Lupinacci has drafted legislation that would require every red light camera in New York State to have a yellow light countdown clock as well. Assembly Bill A.2618 would require the placement of countdown clocks alerting motorists of the duration of yellow lights in locations where red light cameras are operated. Assembly Bill 7894 would impose minimum duration requirements on these yellow lights. This way, motorists would have fair, adequate, and predictable notice associated with yellow-to-red signal changes. Both bills were referred to the Committee on Transportation and are waiting for a Senate sponsor.

“These yellow light countdown clocks would take the burden off of busy travelers trying to get through an intersection. These bills also would reassure motorists who believe these red light cameras have been implemented to take money out of New Yorkers’ pockets,” said Lupinacci.

“I encourage all of my colleagues in the Assembly to join me on this bill so we can keep our roadways hassle free for motorists,” concluded Lupinacci.
