Fire at Crestwood Day Camp in Melville Nov. 5th

The Melville Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Crestwood Day Camp on Round Swamp Road, Thursday, November 5, 2015, at 6:23 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large maintenance garage fully engulfed in flames which was attached to another garage and a classroom structure. Firefighters began an aggressive attack on the blaze and requested mutual aid assistance from the Huntington Manor, Dix Hills, Greenlawn, Plainview, East Farmingdale and Farmingdale fire departments. Nearly 80 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze with eight trucks, and had the blaze under control within a half hour. Four ambulances from Melville and Dix Hills FD’s were on the scene for EMS support during the incident. Units were under the command of Melville Fire Chief Mike McKeefrey with operations handled by Assistant Chiefs Jason Bernfeld and Paul Mahler. The garage was heavily damaged and suffered a partial collapse, with minor damage to the adjoining classrooms. There were no injuries reported, and the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Fire Marshal are investigating.
