A letter from the Chief of the Dix Hills Fire Department – Robert D. Fling Jr.

I am writing this to you asking for your assistance in helping one of our brothers. Lieutenant John Vierling has been a member of the Dix Hills Fire Department for nearly twenty years.

John Vierling

In addition to that he served the New York City Police Department for twenty years until his retirement in January of 2003. When the tragedy of September 11th struck John responded as did so many others.  After his initial response that day he spent three months down at the “pile”.

Unfortunately his tireless work at Ground Zero comes with a high price. In November of this year John was diagnosed with a rare and untreatable form of liver cancer that has directly been linked to his time spent at Ground Zero. As I am sure you can imagine, this has placed a huge burden physically, emotionally and financially not only to him but his family as well.

The Dix Hills Fire Department is currently accepting donations to ease the financial burden placed on his family. It is my hope that you will find it acceptable to help us help our brother in his time of need. I thank you in advance for you assistance and ask that you keep John, his family as well as all those that are battling 9/11 related diseases in your thoughts and prayers.

Donations may be made by credit card through a GoFundMe account that has been established at: https://www.gofundme.com/mjf6pyc8

Checks can be made payable to the Dix Hills Fire Department Benevolent Fund and sent to 115 East Deer Park Road, Dix Hills, NY 11746.

Firematically,

Robert D. Fling Jr.
Chief of Department
