Wake of the Dutchman
The Alfred Van Loen Gallery at the South Huntington Public Library is delighted to present the photography of Virginia Mallon, exhibiting her series “Wake of the Dutchman”. Mallon through her lens captures deteriorating wooden ships and their nautical environment. We invite you to join us at the artist’s reception Saturday, February 6, 2-4pm. The exhibit will remain open to February 25.
Mallon is a photographer, painter and blogger who focuses on human and environmental subjects, with a goal to reflect and comment on current conditions. In Mallon’s series “Wake of the Dutchman” she shares her deliberate eye revealing the torn rigs, worn and weathered chips of brilliant paint colors, the salts and winds revealing a new under layer of beauty. All the transience from the neglected and old ships and their surroundings. Photographing below the water Mallon also shows how both worlds collide, our world, our backyard, man and his environment, the vulnerable and strong together. The artist leading us to see more then may not be a part of our busying schedules.
Mallon resides in Northport and is an advocate for Long Island Preserves and the protection of the Long Island ecology.
Recent projects in photography include Chasing Saturn which folds Greek and Roman mythology into contemporary dreams and memories. Wilderness of Salt, a series of paintings on burlap depicting historic and mythological women who are paralleled against contemporary counterparts.
