Members of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad brought an ambulance and a first responder vehicle to the YMCA last Friday to give pre school children the opportunity to see EMS up close. The purpose of the visit was to explain to the children that an ambulance is nothing to be afraid of and that an ambulance coming to their home or school is to help someone who is sick or injured.
The children were allowed to go into the ambulance to see the various equipment that is used to treat victims and to meet some of the members who respond to emergencies.
It is important to teach young children that, although the situation may be scary, there is nothing to fear when an ambulance arrives. Children should also be taught at an early age how to call the 911 system when help is needed. Many times a young child who has called for help has in fact saved the life of a relative who had suffered a medical emergency.
