The Huntington Camera Club will be hosting their second Photography Fights Cancer event on June 4, 2016 at the John Glenn High School Relay for Life in Elwood, NY. The event will feature an auction of art pieces donated by Camera Club members, as well as free portrait sessions for cancer survivors and their caregivers. 100% of the donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Photography Fights Cancer was started in 2016 by Huntington Camera Club member Harry Schuessler and his daughter, Alexa Schuessler. In 2013, after being diagnosed at age 24 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Long Island native Alexa Schuessler began the fight of her life. But as she fought her own personal battle, she became inspired to fight the larger battle; the fight for a cure for cancer. With the support of her friends and family behind her, Alexa has become a cancer activist, working to raise money in support of the American Cancer Society.
Alexa went into remission in 2014, but her advocacy mission continues with Photography Fights Cancer. After two very successful years raising a combined $15,000 for her local Relay for Life, Alexa and her father Harry felt they could do more; that is how idea of Photography Fights Cancer was born.
“Take my word for it, there is one phrase in every language that no one wants to hear, and that will change your life forever – You have cancer,” said Harry Schuessler, “Since hearing those word in a diagnosis for my oldest daughter Alexa, I have been focused on helping find a cure for all forms of cancer.”
The inaugural Photography Fights Cancer event was held on April 13, 2016 at John Glenn High School. The event raised over $4,400 for the American Cancer Society. The Huntington Camera Club invites the whole community to join in the fight against cancer on June 4th at their second Photography Fights Cancer event at John Glenn High School.
