“Stay Suffolk” – Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s new campaign aimed at encouraging Suffolk County residents to explore parks and enjoy activities close to home will not only help to keep tax dollars here in Suffolk County, but will get residents to learn what makes Long Island’s parks, beaches, golf courses and historic sites a great vacation destination.
The Suffolk County Parks Department is pleased to offer a wide-range of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy. Here are a few of this week’s highlighted events for residents to explore and check off the “Stay Suffolk” list.
June 18 Nature Program 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Suffolk County Environmental Center – Islip. . Join us for an exciting and informative nature program based around what’s happening in nature that day. Suitable for all ages. FREE. For information and to register, call (631) 581-6908.
June 18 & 19th PIRATE FESTIVAL – 11:00 am – 6:00 pm at the Long Island Maritime
Museum Grab yer little swashbucklers and seafarin’ scoundrels and prepare to have the time of yer life! Roving entertainment and performances by The Greatest Pyrate Story Never Told, Billy bones, Geoff Marsh, Kings of the Coast, Ye Pyrate Brotherhood and more! Admission: $8; Kids 5 & Under are FREE. June 19 Family Nature Program 1:00 – 2:00 pm at the Suffolk County Environmental Center – Islip. Here’s your family’s chance to get outside together and enjoy a nature fix after a long week. Programs will be geared around what is happening outside that day. FREE. To register, call (631) 581-6908.
June 19 Antiques, Vintage and Collectibles Show 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at Sagtikos Manor – West Bay Shore. Featuring over 30 vendors, raffles, Appraiser, plant sale, & Manor House Tours. For information: www.sagtikosmanor.org

WEST HILLS COUNTY PARK Huntington 854-4423 West Hills Park, 855 acres is situated in Huntington/Melville near the County Line. The highest point on Long Island at Jayne’s Hill is situated in the northeastern corner of the park. The Walt Whitman Trail, a spur of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, winds through the park terminating at Walt Whitman’s Birthplace. Directions: For camping take exit 48 north off the Long Island Expressway to High Hold Drive. Entrance is on the right. For picnics and horseback riding take exit 49 north to Sweet Hollow Road. The entrance is on the right. For hiking, take Sweet Hollow Road and turn right into this north entrance.
