Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department Receives WTC Steel Beam

Filed under: Cold Spring Harbor,Fire,News,Police/Fire/EMS |

The Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department has received one of the last pieces of steel from the remains of the World Trade Center. The Port Authority of NY and NJ had made the steel available to the Department on behalf of the residents of the Cold Spring Harbor community for a memorial that will be built in the park across from the firehouse on Route 25A. The steel beam is believed to have come from Tower One of the World Trade Center and is 17-feet long, four-feet wide and weighing just over 18,000 lbs.

The Cold Spring Harbor FD picked up the beam from a Port Authority storage facility at JFK Airport, and was escorted back to Huntington by units from the Port Authority Police, New York City Police, Nassau County and Suffolk County Police Highway Patrols.

The procession stopped at Cold Spring Harbor FD headquarters where the bell was rung in memory of those that lost their lives on 9/11. The beam was then brought to the Town of Huntington Recycling facility for temporary storage. The flag-draped beam was carefully uncovered and unloaded as firefighters saluted and a bagpiper played Amazing Grace.
