suffolkcountyhealthThe Open Meetings or “Sunshine” laws of New York State and Suffolk County give the public the right to attend meetings of public bodies, listen to the debates and watch the decision-making process in action. The laws also require that notice of the time and place of all meetings be given prior to every meeting.
Following is a list of upcoming meetingsthat fall under the auspices of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Note: Space may be limited at each of these meetings. Guests are asked to call in advance if they plan to attend.

The Peconic Estuary Program is part of the National Estuary Program (NEP), which aims to protect and preserve nationally significant estuaries that are threatened by pollution, development, or overuse. The Peconic Estuary was named an “estuary of national significance” in 1992.

The Peconic Estuary Program Technical Advisory Committee advises the program and its partners on technical and scientific issues, provides technical and scientific feedback to projects, plans and initiatives, and assists the program in research and information gathering.

Environmental Quality Board of Review

The Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county’s requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials, as stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code. A listing of each month’s scheduled hearings may be obtained in the days prior to the hearing by contacting the Department of Health Services’ Division of Environmental Quality at 852-5800.

The Peconic Estuary Program (PEP) Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) promotes public awareness of the estuary while advising the PEP about important goals and concerns of the citizens of Long Island’s east end. This is an important opportunity for summer residents of the watershed to have their concerns heard, and to get involved in the management of the bays.  There will be presentations from local experts, and impactful project leaders will share their work and experience.

Members of the community are invited to speak out in support of clean water and healthy bays.
