Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a police vehicle that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Dix Hills today with the Dix Hills Fire Department responded to the accident involving a motorcycle and police vehicle on the Long Island Expressway August 24, 2016. The department dispatched two ambulances, three heavy rescue trucks, paramedic and first responder units. Dix Hills Rescue Squad Emergency Medical Technicians assisted the injured motorcyclist and police officer.
A marked Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety vehicle was struck in the rear by a motorcycle, on the westbound Long Island Expressway, approximately 500 feet east of Exit 51, at approximately 1:25 p.m. The operator of the police vehicle was attempting to make a U-turn at an area designated for emergency vehicles.
The motorcyclist was transferred to a Suffolk Police medivac helicopter that landed on the expressway, and he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. The officer was transported to Huntington Hospital by Dix Hills Rescue Squad ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The victim’s names are being withheld until notification of family members.
