On Aug. 31, 2016 the Elwood Union Free School District welcomed eight new teachers and three Academic Intervention Service tutors to the district for the 2016-17 school year.
The new staff members were introduced to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, as well as principals and administrators. Led by Director of Humanities Pamela Fine and Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen Kelly-Gorman, the group participated in icebreaker activities to help them get better acquainted.
Ms. Fine discussed the importance of icebreakers in the classroom and stressed the use of accountable talk when leading discussions with students.
“We are very excited to have these new teachers and staff members join our team here in Elwood,” Ms. Fine said. “We are always looking to identify candidates that will propel our instructional programs forward and create new opportunities for students to learn.”
The group also learned about the technology resources available to them, best classroom practices and special education regulations. They also took a bus tour of the community, led by Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s Assistant Principal Leroy Cole.
Elwood’s 11 new staff members gather at Elwood Middle School on Aug. 31 for New Teacher Orientation.
