Five residents safely escaped a house fire on Caledonia Road in Dix Hills on Tuesday morning, November 1, 2016. The Dix Hills Fire Department received the call shortly before 6 a.m., and upon arrival found a second floor bedroom ablaze. About 40 Dix Hills firefighters and EMS personnel responded with five trucks, three ambulances and a paramedic unit. The Melville Fire Department assisted at the scene with a Rapid Intervention Team, while the Greenlawn Fire Department provided standby coverage. The Town of Huntington Cyanide Response Team was also activated, which is standard procedure for all active fires. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 45 minutes, under the command of Chief Robert Fling. The fire was contained to the bedroom with heavy smoke damage to the second floor. The fire appears to be accidental in nature, and is under investigation by the Huntington Town Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police Arson Squad.
