The Melville Fire Department responded to an crash involving an overturned 18-wheel dump truck on Route 110 and the South Service Road on Tuesday morning, November 29, at around 5:30 a.m. The crash occurred as the truck was turning and the full load of dirt it was carrying shifted, overturning the truck onto its side and rupturing both diesel fuel tanks. The driver was able to escape without injuries. About 50 gallons of fuel spilled onto the road and southbound Route 110 was closed during the entire morning rush hour.melvillefdtruck

Melville firefighters responded with three engines, heavy rescue truck and an ambulance, under the direction of Assistant Chiefs Paul Mahler and David Kaplan. Firefighters used an absorbent to contain the spill which stopped the fuel runoff from entering nearby storm drains. Melville FD turned the scene over to Suffolk County Police, and the Town of Huntington Spill Response Team and NYS DEC were notified to respond.
