All upperclassmen on the Northport High School Girls Varsity Field Hockey team were named to the Keith Waldman – Optimal Performance Associates/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) High School National Academic Squad. In addition, senior Gabrielle Bica received the Scholar of Distinction award for the second consecutive year.
To be part of the National Academic Squad, high school juniors and seniors must achieve a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or the equivalent through the first quarter of the 2016-17 school year. These Northport student-athletes are 18 out of 2,522 honorees for this year’s squad. Bica was honored with the Scholar of Distinction award for falling in the minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0 or the equivalent range. She was one of only 714 students to receive this distinction.
Juniors and seniors on the team include Elizabeth Caccavale, Amelia Cusack, Josephine DeTolla, Ryan Dowling, Olivia Fontana, Maggie Fox, Courtney Healy, Sydney Hernandez, Natalie Langella, Olivia Lewis, Kathleen Little, Julia McGinley, Kristen Nicolai, Sophia Onufrik, Theresa Reinesch, Meghan Smith and Angela Vivona.
Each are a part of more than 2,500 student-athletes from 328 schools named to this prestigious group.
“The fact that all of our upperclassmen have earned this honor speaks volumes about the mission of Northport High School and the school district for our athletes to be valued as students first,” said coach Gina Walling. “These group of girls are the true definition of student-athletes. While maintaining their incredible academic marks, they also finished 2nd in Suffolk Division 1 and 4th in Suffolk Class A for the second consecutive year.”
