Thursday February 16, 2017 proved to be a challenging day for the crews at the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. They had already answered 8 calls for medical assistance since 7 AM when, at 2: 47 PM, they received a call for a patient with chest pain on W, 19th Street. Two minutes later a call was received for a fire at Pidgeon Hill Road. One minute after that a call came in for someone sick at the Huntington Medical Group on Pulaski Road, two minutes after that a call was received on Dumbarton Dr.
Chief Casey Orr, on scene at the fire determined that two ambulances were needed. An adult male who suffered burns to his hands and face had to be transported to Huntington Hospital and the second ambulance was to remain on scene in case of further injuries. Within 5 minutes 5 ambulances were on the road answering calls for help. An additional call was received at 3:16 PM. Captain Kathy Castillo answered the call in a first responder vehicle only to find the patient had left the location so the ambulance was given a disregard. The day was not over yet and before it was 8 more calls were received and answered by the Thursday crews. Although it did not set a record for the number of calls answered in a 24 hours period, it came in at a close second with a total of 21 calls from people in need of emergency medical assistance. The volunteers of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad rose to the challenge and handled every one of them.
God Bless our 1st responders.
