Huntington Pedestrian Killed in Motor Vehicle Crash

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian in Huntington Station last night.

Margaret Smith was crossing New York Avenue at the intersection of Railroad Street when she was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Segundo Carchi at approximately 10 p.m. Smith, 60, of Huntington Station, was transported to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Carchi, 46, of Corona, Queens, was not injured.

At approximately 10 PM Monday night Casey Orr, Chief of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, 1st. Deputy Chief Liz Mohr, and 2nd. Deputy Chief Matt Valle were returning from a meeting in a HCFAS vehicle at the intersection of New York Avenue and Broadway when they heard a loud bang. They turned on the emergency lights to check out the scene and found a woman approximately 60 years old who had been struck by a SUV while attempting to cross New York Avenue. Margaret Smith was crossing New York Avenue at the intersection of Railroad Street when she was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Segundo Carchi at approximately 10 p.m. Smith, 60, of Huntington Station, was transported to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Carchi, 46, of Corona, Queens, was not injured. Emergency medical care was initiated immediately while an ambulance was dispatched from HCFAS headquarters along with a First Responder staffed by Advanced Life Support personnel. 

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
