Spicy Sounds for a Hot Night: Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra Return for 11th Summer

Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra will fill the night with music, dancing and romance when they return to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum on Friday, August 4, 2017 for their 11th annual performance of Spicy Sounds for a Hot Night.

The popular rain-or-shine event takes place in the Celebration Tent overlooking Northport Bay, 6 to 10 p.m. Estate grounds open at 5:00. The performance – for listening and dancing – will be 7:00 to 10:00.

Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, and to take professional, club-style Latin dance lessons ($5 per person, offered from 6:00 to 6:45) before the main event begins. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

Bronx-born bassist Alex Torres formed his 12-piece orchestra in October 1980 in Amsterdam, New York. They have been invited to hundreds of festivals, performing-arts centers and events to perform their original blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cha-cha, Bomba, Plena and Latin Jazz. In 2015, they took their Soy Salsa concert on a nine-day tour of Shanghai, China.

Torres and his orchestra have shared the stage and billings with such major acts as Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Los Hermanos Moreno, Arturo Sandoval, Ray Barretto, Jane Burnette & The Spirits of Havana, Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Brenda K. Starr, Jerry Gónzalez & The Fort Apache Band, King Changó, Branford Marsalis, and the Count Basie, Woody Herman and Charles Mingus big band orchestras.

The group has been registered with various New York State Arts-In-Education programs for more than 25 years. Their music has been featured in numerous movies and television shows, including Ugly Betty, The Blacklist, Quiero Mis Quinces and Bloodline.
