At approximately 9:15 AM on Saturday morning June 17, 2017 the Huntington Community First Aid Squad (HCFAS) received a “call “ that there was an active shooter at St. Anthony’s High School with an unknown number of gunshot victims. Two ambulances were immediately dispatched to the school. The first crew arrived at the school at 9:22 AM and was notified by Suffolk County Police on scene that the shooter was neutralized and the building was safe to enter. When the crew entered the school it was determined there was 20 victims on the first and second floors with a variety of gunshot wounds. Additional ambulances and crews were requested. As the crews went through the building they quickly tagged the victims according to the severity of their condition. They were evacuated and brought to the treatment area. Once there their wounds were treated and they were sent to the staging area where ambulances were ready to take them to the “hospital”. (For practical purposes the Walt Whitman Mall north parking lot was the “receiving hospital”) HCFAS responded with 6 ambulances, 2 first responder vehicles and the MCI ( Multi Casualty Incident )vehicle which contains extra equipment. All Chiefs were on scene as well as 25 crew members. These ongoing training sessions help ensure that EMS responders are ready for any type of emergency medical situation.
The Huntington Community First Aid Squad would like to thank the following for helping with this important training drill:
Nassau Police Explorers and HCFAS Explorers who were the “victims”
Suffolk County PD who were first on “scene” and provide safety for responding EMS and Cold Spring Harbor FD who provided in house crews to handle any actual emergency calls.
