Gershow Recycling Donates More than 1,200 Pounds of Scrap Aluminum to 16 Long Island FIRST® Robotics Competition Teams

Representatives from FIRST® Robotics Competition teams from across Long Island participate in the Ninth Annual Scrap Metal Day event held at Gershow Recycling’s Medford facility on Saturday, December 9, 2017. Gershow hosts the event each year in an effort to provide the teams with the metal necessary to build the 120-pound robots that are used during the SBPLI Long Island Regional, and other FIRST tournament events throughout the season.

For nearly a decade, Gershow Recycling has opened its Medford facility to local FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island robotics teams, including coaches, students and their parents, to enable the teams to collect aluminum scrap metal. This year, 16 teams benefitted from Gershow’s Scrap Metal Day donation event, which took place on Saturday, December 9, 2017. Following the 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition kick-off, which took place on Saturday, January 6 at Stony Brook University, each of the teams now has six weeks to construct a 120-pound robot, using the aluminum, and prepare for the upcoming competition, presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI).

The 16 Long Island teams represented at Gershow’s Scrap Metal Day included Bridgehampton High School (#5659), Central Islip High School (#4006), Center Moriches High School (#4458) Half Hollow Hills High School (#3624), Hauppauge High School (#358), Kings Park High School (#5736), Longwood High School (#564), Miller Place High School (#514), North Shore High School (#3950), Patchogue-Medford High School (#329), Plainview-Old Bethpage High School (#353), Rocky Point/Shoreham (#6442), Townsend Harris High School (#2601), Ward Melville High School (#6423) and Westhampton Beach High School (#3171). One rookie team, Mineola (#6806) also attended the event, under the guidance of veteran team representatives in attendance.

Now entering its 19th, season the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition is held annually at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in late March or early April. Following record-breaking registration for the 2017 SBPLI Long Island Regional, the organization is now hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates, April 9 to 11 and April 12 to 14, 2018. Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams – from across Long Island, New York City, greater New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington D.C., Canada, Croatia and Turkey – competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds.
