Cutting-Edge Television Comedy Classics
With Producer, Writer and Director Sal St. George
Thursday, October 3 @ 7:30PM
Sal St. George examines “The Honeymooners” and how legendary comedian Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden turned memories of his own Brooklyn apartment into an acclaimed TV series. He will discuss the groundbreaking comedy, “All in the Family” starring Carol O’Connor as Archie Bunker, the bigoted loud-mouth who turned a consciousness-raising mirror on American audiences. Optimist Ralph Kramden and Realist Archie Bunker are two bombastic, short-tempered, opinionated blue-collar workers living in the outer boroughs of New York City. Saint George explores how these two comedies became cutting-edge classics, but in opposite directions

Rock ‘n Roll: The Musical, Social and Cultural Roots
With Music Producer, Historian and Author Robert Cohen
Thursday, October 24 @ 7:30PM
In almost any ethnic neighborhood in the early 1950s, in housing projects and schoolyards, there was that sound – on street corners under lamplight or moonlight, under boardwalks or elevated train lines, inside hallways and under stairwells. Explore the components of the style of vocal group harmony singing that became known as “doo-wop” – the forgotten third of rock ’n roll; consider its musical, social, cultural, and religious roots; and hear how this music, in its innocence and quest for harmony, so beautifully conveyed the poetry of inner-city life. Robert Cohen offers examples from black, white, and integrated groups from all five boroughs of New York City.

Post-War Films and the New Spirit of Realism
With Film Historian and Author Philip Harwood
Thursday, October 31 @ 7:30PM
With the end of the Second World War, films produced in Hollywood took on a new spirit of realism – some with controversial subjects. Such topics as returning veterans adjusting to civilian life, alcoholism, anti-Semitism, mental illness, and racism, were material for screenwriters, some adapted from best-selling novels.
Many of these films were awarded with the highest of Hollywood honors. Producers had a name for these films: Problem Pictures. Philip Harwood presents an overview of a transitional time in Hollywood: realism on the screen, during the height of the House Un-American Activities Committee trials. His discussion will be supplemented with clips from such films as The Lost Weekend, The Best Years of Our Lives, Gentlemen’s Agreement, The Snake Pit, Crossfire, Pinky, The Man With The Golden Arm, and No Way.
Temple Beth El’s Continuing Education programs are free of charge and open to all who wish to attend.
Light refreshments and coffee/tea will be served.
