Northport High School senior selected for BAE Systems Women in Technology program

Northport High School senior Soraya Basrai has been selected for Women in Technology, a program run by BAE Systems Electronic Systems sector. Soraya began the program this fall and will graduate in November.

Math teacher Kristen Rozell had shared the opportunity with her students, and Soraya opted to apply in hopes of participating in external engineering experiences beyond the school offerings. After completing the online application, she was notified of her selection and picked up her engineering kit to participate in the program, which is taking place virtually this year.

Soraya acknowledged that women have traditionally not been as prevalent in the engineering space and this led her to want to find more opportunities to explore the field. In addition to participating in BAE Systems Women in Technology, she also signed up for coding courses through Girls Who Code this summer, furthering her engineering and technology work. She hopes to pursue a career in either electrical, computer or biomedical engineering.

BAE Systems describes Women In Technology as giving female high school students with an aptitude in math and science “a practical, hands-on opportunity to explore careers in various technical disciplines.” Women who participate and go on to major in engineering are also encouraged to apply for summer internships through BAE Systems.
