Dix Hills FD Responds to Explosion with Burn Victim

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to reports of a fire pit explosion with a burn victim at a home on Gillette Street at about 9:40 p.m., Thursday, March 12, 2015. Firefighters arrived to find an adult male with burns resulting from a gas can that exploded next to the backyard fire pit. The patient was treated by EMT’s and paramedics from the Dix Hills Rescue Squad and transported by ambulance to the helicopter landing zone at the Candlewood Middle School on Carlls Straight Path. The patient was transferred to the Suffolk Police Medivac and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with first and second degree burns of the upper body. About 35 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel were on the scene with three engines, two ambulances, paramedic and first responder units, under the command of First Assistant Chief Tom Napolitano and Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz.
